Nine Fun Things to Do in Winter

Ontario Cottage Rental Activities:

The hot hazy days of summer at the cottage have been replaced by the white soft fluffy snow of the season – Winter!!!  Alas, the sparkles of the snow crystals that look like diamonds in the sun, the crunch of crisp snow under your feet, the chirp of the chickadee and nutcracker, the hoot of an owl in the evening….. it can be absolutely breathtaking.  This is just a part of the magic of Muskoka.

And if you take a look at some of the cottage rentals that are available in the winter, you will likely be surprised at how many there are available for rent.

Winter is a season to be celebrated and enjoyed and there are so many exciting things to do or to try if you are a novice at winter fun.  If this is your first winter experience in a cottage rental, then you are in for a real treat and an experience to remember.  Maybe you’ll become passionate about a new sport, or reading by a crackling fire.

Snow fall in Muskoka and Parry Sound area has hit record numbers this year already. During mid Dec. snowfall in many areas around Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville hit over 100 cm.  That’s a LOT of snow….. more to play in!

9 exciting things to do at your Ontario Cottage Rental this winter season:

Snowshoeing – if you don’t have your own snowshoes you can rent them, or for a minimal investment you can purchase some for the entire family.  This is a great sport as there are no associated costs – just put the shoes on and head out the back door.  Skill level – no special skills are required – if you can walk you can snowshoe.

Cross-Country Skiing – you can also rent cross country skies, which is usually a less expensive option than purchasing if this is your first time out.  You can either head out on the lake  (ONLY after checking with local authorities that it is safe to do so), or to one of the many trails that will be in your area.  Provincial Parks usually have groomed trails, and there are lots of other trails that can be used as well.

Skating – if your skating has been limited to indoor areas, then you simply have to experience the outdoor skating rink.  Not always as smooth as the indoor rinks, it is definitely more fun and exhilarating, and usually free!

Snow tubing – this can be a fun adventure for the whole family.  It’s worth the drive to one of these parks if just to experience the thrill of speeding down a snow covered hill at speeds that will certainly excite the little ones, and some of the older ones!

Dog Sledding – ahhhh this is one experience every Ontario cottage rental should include.  Most of cottage country gets enough snow, more of course the further north you go – Parry Sound and Muskoka areas are excellent choices.  Whether you want to spend a few hours or a full day, this is one winter experience that will be among your most memorable.

Snowmobiling – the OFSC (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs) represents 231 clubs in Ontario – and they KNOW snowmobiling!  Rentals can be arranged locally for newcomers to the sport, permits will need to be purchased, and appropriate clothing is a must.  This can be a fun sport for all members of the family – just be sure to know the rules and Play Safely !!!

Snowboarding – in many areas of Ontario snowboarding now surpasses skiing as the down hill sport of choice.  And it’s not just for the young but also the young at heart.  If you are used to skiing, you’ll find it very different in a few ways – your feet are set on the board, facing sideways when you are standing.  This can make getting off the chair lift a bit of a challenge the very first time.  Sliding down the hill sideways seems strange at first, but leaning carve and turn is quite similar.  Give it a try – you might be very surprised at the thrills it provides!  Hidden Valley Highlands in Huntsville offers lessons to all ages.

Ice fishing – this is a great winter sport that you may even be able to do right outside the door of your Ontario cottage rental.  You don’t need a fish-hut to ice fish!  Just an auger to make the hole, the appropriate fishing rods and some bait and regular fishing equipment.  Always check ice conditions before you head out!

Winter Carnivals – A winter carnival is so much fun for the whole family!!!  A short drive from your Ontario cottage rental will likely take you to one of these festivals listed below.  They often include a pancake breakfast, diners, vendors, interactive events for the kids, rides on dog sleds, or wagon rides…. The list of activities is extensive, so check out these winter carnivals for a great fun-filled weekend!
